ART FIX: Celebrate the Channel Islands with a new exhibition
Friday 19 January 2024
A new exhibition curated by art organisations in Jersey and Guernsey has launched today, exploring the past, present and future of the Channel Islands.
Every weekend, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.
Here's this week's offering...
Contemporary Art Show
ArtHouse Jersey launched its Contemporary Art Show at Capital House today which will run until 25 February.
The exhibition aims to offer new perspectives on how the Channel Islands relate to their pasts and a wider global future.
Audiences can expect a show that explores the inspiration that the Channel Islands have offered to artists through history, particularly from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, and one that reflects the more complex social realities of the Islands today. It will also consider how both these realities continue to shape the Channel Islands’ relation to the wider world.
This diverse exhibition features 19 artists from Jersey, Guernsey, Germany, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Russia, Moldova and Switzerland.
It has been produced and curated by ArtHouse Jersey and Art for Guernsey, in association with Les Champs Libres in Rennes.
ArtHouse Jersey said: "With stunning landscape and portrait photography, exquisite and subtly layered painted works alongside sculptural and video pieces, it will both question and invite the viewer to reflect on themselves and the complex global histories of these Islands.
"The show promises to be mysterious and experiential for the visitor, with shifting and changing perspectives, much like the Islands themselves when seen from close-up and afar, as visitors walk through the gallery environment."
The work will be showcased first at ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House between 19 January and 25 February 2024 followed by a month-long exhibition at Art for Guernsey in St Peter Port opening on Thursday 7 March 2024.

The organisers said: "Those cheeky chappies and lovely ladies of the 'renowned ROGER Radio cast' are back and this time it’s DREADFUL! Prepare to delve into the grim laboratory of Dr Frankenstein from the comfort of your theatre seat. Experience the creation of a monster from several human corpses (EURGH!) and GASP as the creature comes to life. Play the part of a humble local to save the village from the creature’s revenge."

Sound Bath
Sound Therapy Jersey, an alternative and holistic health service, will be hosting a 'sound bath' event to guide participants into a meditative state.
A 'sound bath' is a holistic wellness practice in which sound therapists use various instruments to create soothing sounds and vibrations that produce a relaxing experience for participants who immerse themselves in the harmonious sounds.
Sound Therapy Jersey said: "The sounds of bowls and gongs are special waves that can soothe emotions, bring blissful relaxation in the body, and soothe the mind. They work similarly to the waves of water in the sea or lake, which swaying and lifting they give a feeling of lightness and total relaxation."
The event will be held at The Bridge, St Saviour and more information can be found HERE.
Jazz Club at La Haule Manor
Islanders can enjoy jazz music at La Haule Manor every Saturday evening until March 2024.
