A virtuoso guitarist considered one of the finest classical players in the world - and described by Queen’s Brian May as “exquisite” - will be working with local schoolchildren next week.
Every Friday, Express presents a selection of online and offline exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.
Here's this week's selection..
Thumbprints, sequins and buttons have been transformed into Jersey scenes, fairytale landscapes, and mythical creatures in one of the biggest exhibitions of local children’s art in recent years.
Art in the Frame Foundation - the managing charity behind the Harbour Gallery - recently provided free canvases to children to help encourage their creativity… and such was the response, that a second consignment had to be ordered.
The result is the Children’s Art Exhibition at the Harbour Gallery, which opened last week and runs up until Mon 28 February.
“One of the biggest exhibitions of children's art in the last few years there are over 115 canvases filling the whole of gallery 2, the work is amazing, what enthusiastic future talent this island has and which needs to be nurtured,” the gallery said.
The Harbour Gallery Jersey is open six days a week from 10:00 until 16:00.
Guitarist Carlos Bonell will be hosting workshops at local schools next Friday (4 March).
The visit is part of a partnership between Standard Bank’s offshore investment arm Melville Douglas, and Music in Action, a local charity which hosts workshops to educate and inspire children in music.
Ahead of those visits, he’ll be playing an intimate gig at Government House in Aid of the charity on Thursday night, and will play music from the Magical Mystery Guitar Tour, which was inspired by his association with Paul McCartney.
One of the school’s that will be benefiting from his visit is Janvrin,
“It is a real pleasure to be partnering with Melville Douglas to bring such an acclaimed artist to Jersey for such an intimate gig. A key part of the initiative is Carlos working with children at Janvrin School. Staggeringly its catchment area means that around 25% of all families receive the Jersey Premium,” said Chair, James Mews.
“We are so grateful to the Lieutenant Governor Sir Stephen and Lady Dalton for their support and delighted to be staging the evening at the special venue. Government House will lend itself perfectly to a soiree and, I’ve no doubt, exceed expectations for all.”
