ART FIX: Mixtape madness

Friday 31 March 2023

Take a trip back in time this week with 'Mixtape' — an exhibition bringing together some of the greatest artists from the 80s, 90s and new millennia in a 'mixtape' of visual richness, blending the Pop Art of Warhol and Haring with the Street Art of Banksy...

Every weekend, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here's this week's offering...

Comprising of 120 works by 40 artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Banksy, ‘Mixtape’ pays homage to the monumental moments from the worlds of pop art, graffiti, street art and hip-hop and reflects upon the influence these artists have had on subsequent generations of fashion designers, DJ’s, film makers, photographers and artists.

Whether spray painting directly onto walls, social activism or political rebellion anti-establishment thinking and creativity was at the heart of one of the most influential cultural movements on the last half century.

Mixtape is a giant salon hang exhibition which in many ways provides the soundtrack of our lives and examines how these cultural narratives shifted the public's perception of underground art and culture leading to a global creative revolution in art, music and fashion.

Guernsey_islands_art_comp.jpeg

Guernsey Arts will be running a digital-only art programme to run alongside the Island Games, with entries now open to people from all the participating islands.

The Islands Digital Arts Open is asking artists from Bermuda to Jersey to submit work with the theme of ‘islands’, which can be existing pieces or an original creation.

Submissions should explore the significance of an individuals’ island home, be it a dramatic viewpoint, an iconic landmark, emotive building, or an interpretation of a historic moment. These could include a photograph, short film, an animation, digital art, or high-resolution scan of physical work.

A chosen piece from each of the 24 islands will be replicated and exhibited in the George Crossan Gallery in the Market Buildings and showcased digitally on screens at various sporting venues in July.

Entries can be submitted online HERE until April 30.
