ART FIX: Sunflowers, Portuguese flavours and French films in the park

Friday 25 August 2023

From exploring a sunflower maze to enjoying espetadas and picadinho or kicking back with a picnic and French film on 'Ze Big Screen'... there's lots to do this bank holiday weekend.

Every weekend, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here's this week's offering...

French film on' Ze Big Screen'

It's your last chance to enjoy a FREE French film in Howard Davis Park next week, and CineStef (aka Stefan Rousseau) has picked out two classics.

On Monday 24 August, audiences can enjoy Jour de Fête (The Big Day), an iconic 1949 French comedy about an inept and easily distracted postman.

On Thursday 31 August, Cinestef will be screening Amelie (2001), which follows the story of an imaginative young waitress in Paris on a quest to spread joy to others, featuring a stunning soundtrack by Yann Tiersen.

Screenings start at 21:00 at the grandstand in Howard Davis Park. Each film is subtitled. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and a picnic.

Follow Cinestef's Facebook page for all the latest updates on screenings.

This bank holiday Monday from 10:00 to 16:00, islanders are being invited to enjoy a range of sunflower and farming-inspired activities at Master Farms on La Rue de Grouville, including: a sunflower maze, meeting Jersey calves, tractor rides, a scavenger hunt. Islanders can also pick their own sunflowers, but must bring secateurs with them for this.

"We are really excited to welcome you back to our farm for our first summer event! The event is in a field and on a working farm so please wear suitable footwear, especially if it has recently rained. We can't wait to see you and are keeping our fingers crossed for lots of sunshine!" the Master Farms team said.

Portuguese Food Festival

The sights sounds and flavours of Portugal will be on offer at People's Park this weekend, with the return of the Portuguese Food Festival from Friday to Monday.

As well as an array of local food producers, there'll also be live music acts to keep attendees entertained throughout the day.

Life in a 14th century castle

Step back in time to the 14th century at Mont Orgueil Castle with the Medieval Companie of the Duke's Leopards on Sunday between 10:00 and 16:00.

Islanders will be able to see wool spinning, knitting, weaving and leather work demonstrations, while also enjoying the aroma of the spices and herbs used in period cookery and medicine. Tales will also be told of bloody castle sieges, archery and sword fighting.

Dress up Disney-style... and wish upon a star

For the third concert of their summer series, Jersey Premier Brass is presenting 'Wish Upon a Star', a Disney and Children’s movie spectacular with selections from, Frozen, The Incredibles, 101 Dalmatians, The Lion King and many more.

Everyone is welcome to come enjoy an afternoon of free entertainment in the glorious surroundings of Howard Davis Park at 15:00, and the audience is encouraged to dress up as their favourite Disney character or superhero.

Cocktails and Blues

From this Sunday, and continuing once a month until the end of the year, the Porter's Store will be hosting a blues and cocktail night.

This weekend's edition features international blues star Giles Robson, whose harmonica skills during a recent show in Madrid were praised by a reviewer for taking listeners on a journey from "from Memphis to Chicago and back", and enabling them to "feel the waters of the Mississippi in the depths of [their] being".

Included in the ticket price is the offer of a Bellini or glass of Prosecco. Doors open from 17:30, with the show starting at 18:00. More information can be found here.

The Original Student Art Exhibition

Jersey Arts Centre is once again showcasing the work of some of the island's up-and-coming artists, with this year's display focusing on four local creatives.

Jodie Bull's body of work features a repetitive colour scheme and various texture, tying to a theme of "disconnection in the world" with survival vs modern western lifestyle, while Brett Hunter's work is inspired by novels and silent films of the 1920s and 1930s.

Steph Shales's collection focuses on "the chaos of human existence", with contrasting themes of editorial beauty mixed with horror, and Stephanie Bexiga's has presented an audiovisual piece centred on domestic abuse and social issues.

Held in upstairs in the Berni Gallery, the free exhibition will be available to view until Saturday 16 September.

Country Fair

Celebrate local traditions in Samares Manor's Harvest Zone, where there will be live music, various activities, plenty of food options as well as arts, crafts and charity stalls.

The event, which is open to all ages, is taking place on Monday 28 August between 10:00 and 17:00. Admission is free for members and children up to 12.
