Floating Earth

Until Sunday 24 September, Queen's Valley Reservoir will house the iconic 'Floating Earth' art installation.

The touring installation is a 10m diameter replica of our planet, and was created from NASA photography of the Earth's surface, portraying the "interconnection of all life, the concept of home and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment".

Aiming to produce "the feelings of awe that astronauts report feeling when viewing the planet from space (otherwise known as the Overview Effect)", the installation will be lit up and be accompanied by a unique soundscape composition by Dan Jones.

Created by British artist Luke Jerram, and partnered with Jersey Water, the project is part of ArtHouse Jersey's 'No Place Like Home' exhibition. The artwork has also been spotted around the UK, such as appearing in Liverpool as part of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Islanders are invited to view the artwork completely free at Queen's Valley Reservoir from Thursday 14 to Sunday 24 September, between sunrise and 22:00.

Express has put together a handy guide about the 'Floating Earth' installation, including information about parking and accessibility, which you can view HERE.

Heritage Open Day

Islanders are being given free access to normally private historical properties for the Heritage Open Day.

To celebrate Jersey's heritage, architecture and culture, locals have been invited to explore the special events, hidden locations and other interesting places and properties that will now be open.

Jersey National Trust is dedicated to restoring, preserving and protecting the islands natural coastal landscapes, biodiverse wildlife and historical locations. They are completely self-funded and independent, and hold events like these to fund their cause whilst also educating locals.

This year’s Heritage Open Day is being supported by the Jersey Community Foundation with funds from the Channel Islands Lottery.

This weekend, The Trust have organised several guided walks, cycling trails and expert talks as well as the new open locations and activities.

South African Bazaar

An "informal and social" indoor market will be held next month to celebrate Jersey's South African community, and organisers are currently looking for vendors who want to have a stall at the event.

On Saturday 7 October, islanders are invited to enjoy good vibes, music and food at the South African Bazaar at Trinity Youth Centre.

The event will be raising funds for the South African Iris House Children's Hospice.

The Jersey Green Room Theatre Company (JGRTC) is presenting the complete works of William Shakespeare all condensed into just one 'bardy' show!

The play will feature just three actors (Estelle Joynt, Nicholas Rolland and Alexander Wilkins), who will perform in each iconic scene as multiple different characters.

Described as "fast and punchy, and, quite literally, in your face!", the show previously ran in London's West End. It will appear at the Jersey Arts Centre for four performances from Tuesday 19 to Friday 22 September at 19:30 each evening.

People We Love

ArtHouse Jersey is looking for islanders to take part in an emotive art installation, People We Love, as part of an immersive exhibition exploring human connections.

'People We Love' is a community-based, international touring artwork where individuals are filmed looking at images of people they love.

In this Jersey edition, ArtHouse Jersey is inviting islanders to take part in this beautiful and timely artwork that centres around the emotion that bonds us all: love.

Guided by an audio meditation, each participant will be filmed gazing at a picture of someone they love – a picture the audience will never see.

Filming takes place at St Helier Town Church during various time slots from Wednesday 13 September to Sunday 17 September 2023.

The footage will be used in People We Love as part of the Skipton Big Ideas: Human Connections exhibition which opens to the public on Friday 3 November 2023.

You can book your filming slot via Eventbrite
