ART FIX: Dust off your vinyls
Friday 22 September 2023
Music lovers are being encouraged to dust off their vinyls ahead of a unique event next weekend which encourages islanders to work together to "create a changing musical narrative".
Every Friday, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.
Here's this week's offering...
Dust off your vinyls
Next Saturday, ArtHouse Jersey will host SoundClash, described by the organisers as "a musical performance with a difference" and a "must for all vinyl heads, musos, sound artists and people with an interest in how we create narratives, work collectively, improvise or create situations to spark creativity and expression".
At SoundClash, five individuals bring 25 vinyl records to be played consecutively and in response to each other for a set duration.
Each person can bring only 25 vinyl records in any format, and the concept is that each musical piece should either lead to the next, creating a new storyline, or clash if the next player cannot follow suit.
The aim is to create a dynamic musical story, with each participant presenting a round by bringing a record that aligns with a predetermined theme.
The event is free to enter and will run between 13:00 and 18:00 on Saturday 30 September.
Audiences can drop in and out or stay for the whole session, where refreshments will be available. More information can be found HERE.
Spread your wings
Discover the vibrant and colourful world of Kelly Eastwood's art exhibition, a captivating journey through her personal experiences in Mexico and the richness of Mexican culture.
Kelly's artwork weaves together elements of Mexican culture, with a particular emphasis on the iconic monarch butterfly, known as 'Mariposa Monarca' in Mexican folklore.
The artist has pledged to contribute half of the proceeds from art sales to support the Butterfly Café's mission of providing opportunities and support to those who have experienced abuse.
The exhibition will be hosted at the Butterfly Café from Friday 29 September to Friday 6 October, with a launch event held on the opening evening from 17:30 to 19:30.
Studio 12+ Opening
Islanders are invited to the opening of Studio 12+ at the Harbour Gallery. The event will be officially opened by Karen Shenton Stone, Constable of St. Martin.
The exhibition will feature 2D and 3D art of a variety of styles, including paintings, prints, ceramics, and textiles.
The Harbour Gallery's charity, Art in the Frame Foundation will also be holding a bottle stall at the opening with prizes including champagne, whiskey, vodka, port, perfume, body lotions and more.
Floating Earth
Don't miss your final opportunity to witness the breathtaking 'Floating Earth' art installation at Queen's Valley Reservoir this weekend.
This touring masterpiece, a 10-meter diameter replica of our planet, has been crafted using NASA's Earth surface imagery. It symbolises the interconnectedness of all life, the concept of home, and a renewed sense of responsibility toward environmental stewardship.
Aiming to produce "the feelings of awe that astronauts report feeling when viewing the planet from space (otherwise known as the Overview Effect)", the installation will be lit up and be accompanied by a unique soundscape composition by Dan Jones.
Created by British artist Luke Jerram, and partnered with Jersey Water, the project is part of ArtHouse Jersey's 'No Place Like Home' exhibition. The artwork has also been spotted around the UK, such as appearing in Liverpool as part of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Islanders are invited to view the artwork completely free at Queen's Valley Reservoir before it closes on Sunday between sunrise and 22:00.
Express has put together a handy guide about the 'Floating Earth' installation, including information about parking and accessibility, which you can view HERE.
Tonight is your last chance to see the Jersey Green Room Theatre Company (JGRTC) complete works of William Shakespeare all condensed into just one 'bardy' show!
The play will feature just three actors (Estelle Joynt, Nicholas Rolland and Alexander Wilkins), who will perform in each iconic scene as multiple different characters.
Described as "fast and punchy, and, quite literally, in your face!", the show previously ran in London's West End.
This evening at 19:30 will be your last opportunity to view the show at the Jersey Arts Centre.

The Path of Least Resistance
This week is your last opportunity to view CCA Galleries International's 'The Path of Least Resistance' exhibition of paintings, ceramics and limited edition prints.
The work is created by artist Dan Baldwin who is famous for his limited-edition silkscreens, ceramic works, monotypes, and producing artwork for album covers that delve into themes of nature, dark features, dreamlike states, and life vs death.
However, his recent collection now being shown at the CCA Galleries has shifted to a more abstract approach, presenting his talents as a visual artist after being inspired by iconic creators such as Jean-Michael Basquiat, David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg and Sir Peter Blake.
Dan's work has been exhibited across the globe, not to mention his successful work with worldwide brands and many charities. To find out more about his work, click here.
Islanders are invited to view 'The Path of Least Resistance' from 12:00-18:00 each day until its closing date on Friday 29 September.
Crochet Class
The Harbour Gallery is hosting a weekly crochet class with Hazel McLaren, starting this Sunday 24 September from 9:30 until 11:00.
The class is for adults and accompanied children, with a particular focus on mother and daughter pairs.
The cost is £30 per session for a pair, with a minimum of four sessions required to book. There is a discount for children if their adult is not participating.
Mr Controversial
Tonight, London artist Mr. Controversial is hosting a solo show at JARO Gallery.
Using oil paint, silkscreen printing, and relatable captions, he transforms vintage images into comical, satirical and sometimes dark stories.

It features a series of newly commissioned local and international works displayed both in and outside of its gallery space.
The exhibition will run until 15 October at ArtHouse Jersey's Capital House.
As part of the ongoing exhibition, Justin Hibbs and Sasha Bowles will discuss the development of new work for No Place Like Home with curator Rosalind Davis.

Artist Talk: Rachel Ara on the Dissent Module
Conceptual artist Rachel Ara will talk about her practice and landing the Dissent Module, a nine-foot-tall silver capsule, at Les Platons.
The talk will be held on Wednesday 27 September at 18:00 within the 'No Place Like Home' exhibition at Capital House.
The Art of Wine
Mind Jersey, in collaboration with Dunell's and Midnight, will host a charity event that combines art, wine, and food.
Attendees will taste different wines and match them with artworks, followed by a three-course dinner that complements the drinks.
The artworks will be auctioned to raise funds for Mind Jersey, and Mind Jersey musicians will also deliver a live performance.
Dr Patricia Tumelty, Executive Director Mind Jersey, urged people to attend the evening, explaining: “Emotional and financial security are the bedrocks of good mental health – both have been shattered by the pandemic and inflation – as we go into winter months, please help Mind Jersey help more people to reconnect with hope and save lives."
Tickets are £130 per person and the event will be held at the Pomme d’Or Hotel on Thursday 19 October from 18:30 until 22:30.
You can contact Jenny via jennyswan209@gmail.com or 07797759253 to book your place.
