ART FIX: Spaghetti forks at the ready! The Gorey Fete is back

Friday 16 August 2024

The Jersey summer calendar wouldn't be the same without the annual Gorey Fete, which boasts a jam-packed weekend of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.

Every weekend, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events and other historic, creative and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here's this week's offering...

Gorey Fete

The annual 60-year-old fete returns this weekend, boasting new additions to the itinerary as well as the usual silly fun such as the spaghetti-eating competition and a firework display.

A silent disco and a revived fancy dress competition for children are part of the new plans for the fete, which for the second year running is getting started on Friday night, rather than the original Thursday night start.

Hosting a range of fairground rides, food stalls and live music, it is set to be a great weekend in Gorey on Friday 16 August.

Organised by a group of volunteers from St Martin and sponsored by Jersey Mutual, the Gorey Fete's gates will open at 10:00 and a fireworks display is scheduled for 22:30.

Tickets can be bought at the gates with children under 5 going free and all proceeds raised will go to a range of charities, including the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Diabetes Jersey and Healing Waves.

More information can be found on their website HERE.

Perfect pets and produce

A wide range of locally grown produce and an array of perfectly groomed pets will be judged this weekend at the RJA&HS Flower and Produce Show.

Taking place at the Trinity-based showground on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18, the show will feature multiple craft and trade stands and this year, organisers have also joined up with Beresford Street Kitchen, who will be hosting their Family Fun Day alongside to make it a double-whammy event.

Bouncy castles, a Kennel Club dog show, mini tractors and face painting are among the fun features that will be on offer on the day, which is due to kick-off at 10:30 and finish at 17:00 on both days.

Tickets cost £4 for adults and £2 for seniors with children and RJA & HS members going free. To view the full itinerary, visit the RJA&HS Facebook page HERE.

Life through a prisoner's eyes

An exhibition in collaboration with the Jersey Prison Service and ArtHouse Jersey has been created to support the importance of arts in prisons and helping prisoners improve their expression and wellbeing.

Running from Friday 16 until Sunday 25 August at Capital House, 'Inside Out' features 100 exhibits created by prisoners at HMP La Moye, ranging from paintings to music, crochet and ceramics.

Capital House is open from 10:30 to 18:00, Sunday to Tuesday,  and the exhibition is free to attend.

Art in the Arches

Local artists have been hard at work recently, creating triptych murals in the arches at Elizabeth Marina.

ArtHouse's Art in the Arches project has seen five artists commissioned to design individual murals under the theme 'Water, Water, Everywhere', with an aim of instilling a greater respect for water in islanders, while also raising awareness of the threats of climate change and population growth.

Sponsored by Jersey Water, the artwork will be delivered in stages, with most of the artists having already started.

A special launch event will take place in September, though the date is yet to be confirmed.

Genuine Jersey Market

The Genuine Jersey Market is returning to St Aubin this weekend.

Taking place on Saturday (17 August) between 09:00 and 15:00 in and around St Brelade's Parish Hall, the market will involve stallholders offering an array of local items and vintage wares for sale.

The markets run all through the summer until September, and all the dates can be found on the Genuine Jersey website HERE.
