Assistant Minister in charge of population standing again

Wednesday 11 May 2022

The Assistant Minister responsible for establishing a population policy for Jersey is standing for re-election with the Jersey Alliance.

Rowland Huelin, who was a founding member of his party, was first elected as Deputy of St. Peter in 2018. He is now seeking re-election in June by standing in the new ‘super-district’ of St. Mary, St. Peter and St. Ouen.

He firstly served on two Scrutiny Panels, and the Planning Committee, before being appointed Assistant Chief Minister in September 2020 – a role which saw him become the politician with responsibility for the population policy.

Most recently, he has been working on the creation of a digital register of all properties in Jersey.

Noting that he felt he had delivered on his previous election commitments, as well as representing parishioners in relation to PFOS concerns, Deputy Huelin commented: "When seeking election in 2018 I stated that in order to give of your best you should enter with the intent of serving two terms.

"The last four years has been a steep learning curve and a rewarding experience. Whilst the learning never stops, I feel I am now better positioned to use that experience to achieve even more for the people of St. Ouen, St. Peter and St. Mary, and the whole island in general. Whether that is to aim to continue with the same projects, being population and migration, or to take on a fresh field, is far from being decided (by me, or more importantly the electorate).

"Regardless, I will seek re-election with the determined ambition to put my heart and soul into trying to make Jersey a better place for all whom I will serve."

Jersey's election is taking place in June 2022.
