Passengers will not be able to book flights from Heathrow to Jersey following a decision by BA to suspend ticket sales on short-haul flights from the UK airport, it has been confirmed.
Passengers will, however, still be able to book flights from Jersey Airport to Heathrow.
The impact was confirmed by Airport Director Robin Macrae this morning.
"The airline has made the decision to comply with Heathrow's cap on passenger numbers. The airport has placed daily limits on the number of passengers who can fly from Heathrow," he explained.
"British Airways has said that this suspension of short-haul ticket sales from London Heathrow will remain in place until 8 August."
He added that BA flights from London City and London Gatwick to Jersey would not be affected.
Economic Development Minister Deputy Kirsten Morel said this afternoon: "The current suspension of tickets sales by British Airways on flights from Heathrow to Jersey highlights the importance of having resilient travel connectivity to and from the island, islanders wanting to book tickets to return to Jersey or people wanting to visit the island this summer are still able to travel from London Gatwick and other London area airports, as well as by air from Southampton and by Ferry from Poole and Portsmouth."
It has been a tumultuous spring-summer season for the airline, which recently signed a five-year deal with Ports of Jersey to guarantee services to and from Heathrow until 2027.
In early July, it decided to cut 10,300 short-haul flights from its schedule.
Towards the end of the month, it emerged that the airline's pilots were considering strike action over pay.
In July 2020, BA pilots agreed to a 20% cut in July, falling to 8% over two years, to mitigate against pandemic job losses. However, national media reported at the end of July that pilots are now clamouring for an increase rather than continuing the salary sacrifice scheme, and were calling for a vote on industrial action.
