Rainbow bakes to support islanders with learning disabilities

Sunday 07 June 2020

Amateur chefs are being invited to show off any skills they've picked up during lockdown while helping islanders with learning disabilities by joining a rainbow-themed bake-off.

Les Amis are inviting islanders to ‘Bake a Rainbow – stay safe’ cake before 22 June, after which their colourful creations will be judged by Samphire restaurant.

With Les Amis having to postpone all fundraising activities, the charity is unable to have its usual presence out in the community and therefore wanted to do something that would bring everyone together.

The charity decided a community bake-off would be a good way to inspire islanders of all ages to get creative and share some positivity during these challenging times.

As all of Les Amis' residents have been self-isolating together since lockdown began, it's hoped that the bake-off will provide a way for them to feel part of the community again.

The bake-off is free to enter. Islanders simply need to submit photos of their bakes - which can take any form, so long as long as they follow the rainbow theme - by email.

Participants are also encouraged to share their cake creations on social media by tagging Les Amis and using the hashtag #BakeARainbow.

Judging will be done by a Samphire chef along with two of the charity’s residents based on presentation only. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, which will be announced on the charity’s social media pages.

“Baking has become quite the phenomenon during lockdown," Shaun Findlay, Managing Director of Les Amis, said. "It’s a useful skill and fun activity that can involve the whole family, which is why Les Amis has decided to put on a community bake off event for all islanders to participate in together.

"The rainbow has become our symbol of hope while reminding everyone to stay safe during covid-19, which is why we have chosen it as the theme for the bake off. We hope as many islanders as possible take part and we look forward to seeing all of the colourful creations.”

While the bake-off is free to enter, the charity reminds islanders that it needs the "continued support of islanders to provide a quality of life to its residents". During lockdown, staff have been working round the clock to ensure residents remain safe and well.

In addition, if any participants wish to donate their bakes to Les Amis, the charity said they would be "gratefully received".
