Free fun for the young on the beach

Wednesday 18 June 2014

A festival giving young Islanders the chance to try out more than a dozen different sports on and off the water will be back on the beach next month.

Thousands took part in a similar event held to mark the Millennium and now 14 years later the Youth Beach Festival for ten to 17-year-olds is making a comeback at Bel Royal on Sunday 6 July.

Youngsters will be able to try out sports for free from dinghy sailing, paddleboarding and kayaking out at sea to cricket, rugby, trampolining and even zorbing on dry land.

There will also be displays from the Sea Cadets, Air Training Corps and Youth Service.

The event has been organised by the Education department in a bid to get more Islanders fit and active.

Assistant Sports Minister Deputy Roy Le Herissier said: “This is exactly in line with what we were hoping the sport strategy would achieve. It’s an event that’s open to young people of all abilities and is aimed at making sport fun and getting people active. We hope as many young people as possible will come along.”

Youth Resources Officer Mitch Couriard said: “Although we’re an island surrounded by water, we know there are young people who never get the chance to try these sports that are on our doorstep. This is an ideal chance for them to have a taster, get free tuition and engage in sport and positive activity. We are looking forward to a great day.”

The fun starts at 11 am and everyone taking part needs permission from their parents. A parental consent form can be downloaded from:
