Beaulieu's Head of Biology, Jon Hale, has been teaching for 15 years, and was nominated as a result of the learning tools and collaborations he has developed to enhance student learning at Beaulieu.

His work has supported the creation of online courses and gone on to benefit teachers across Europe alongside the world-leading Daffodil Project.

Learning of his shortlisting success, Mr Hale said: “I am truly honoured to be shortlisted and to have the opportunity to showcase the biology teaching and learning in our little corner in what is an amazing community of biology teachers across the UK.”

Headmaster and CEO of Beaulieu, Mr Chris Beirne, said: "Jon is an outstanding teacher; he is constantly focusing on improving teaching and learning within his lessons, many of which are highly practical in nature.

"Jon, as a practitioner, believes strongly in learning experiences and the need to encourage practical application while developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-exploration. I am delighted that Jon’s hard work has been recognised through his shortlisting.”

The next stage of the competition involves the three shortlisted teachers submitting a case study, explaining the methods they use to enhance their students’ learning. The Award’s judging panel will also visit each teacher in their own school environment, meeting the finalists, their colleagues and touring the campus.

The overall winner will be announced in August 2022 and will receive £500 for themselves and £500 of school resources, provided by the Oxford University Press.
