Police get big cash boost to fight Cyber Crime

Friday 08 January 2016

The police have more than £200,000 extra cash at their fingertips to help them combat Cyber Crime.

Last year they dealt with 217 cyber cases including fraud and harassment and have now secured EU funding to help officers get more switched on to tackle the problem.

The Jersey High Tech Crime Unit supported 524 investigations last year and checked out more than a thousand devices including computers, phones and digital storage.

They plan to use the money over the next couple of years to develop the SINCERE centre (Small Islands Natiaons Centre of Excellence for Research and Education). and build on the network forum created last year that included Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar and Cyprus.

Jersey Police’s Head of Crime & Criminal Justic Services Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull said: “We are of course delighted to have been successful on behalf of the small island network forum in securing this EU funding.

“Working with other EU States throughout 2016 and 2017 will now allow us to develop a small island centre of excellence and further invest in our staff working in this often complex virtual world in the combat against Cyber Crime.”

Although we're not not part of the EU, the Force were able to submit an umbrella bid as part of a broader Cyber Crime bid being led by Lithuania, in conjunction with 10 already established EU Centres of Excellence to secure the funding.
