Big splash for charity

Tuesday 17 February 2015

It might have been hot in the kitchen but the proceeds from the latest Kitchen Inferno will go a long way to helping hundreds of Islanders keep fit.

The big charity cook-off raised £17,000 for Jersey Cheshire Home – money that will go towards the vital renovation of their Hydrotherapy Centre.

Sixteen novice chefs split into two teams had just one month to sharpen their knives before going head-to-head in a cook off last November in the Highlands Academy Kitchen under the watchful eye of Shaun Rankin.

The Michelin-starred chef designed the menus that included some of the most technically challenging dishes served at his restaurant Ormer and together with seventy guests decided which team was hotter stuff in the kitchen.

Rob Veron took the title once again and led the Blue Islands Team to Victory but all those taking part helped the charity’s Big Splash Appeal.

The Home’s 25 residents use the Hydrotherapy centre every day for physiotherapy and other activities that the charity says are vital for their rehabilitation, recovery and well-being.

The facilities are also used by more than 200 outside users each week including Islanders with MS and Parkinson’s.

The refurbished facility, costing over £305,000 will offer new features and improved standards to all users, enhancing their experience. The regular therapeutic care that this facility and its qualified physiotherapists offer is an extremely important element of the resident’s wellbeing and benefits not only the residents but also many individuals, care homes and charities in the wider community.

Jersey Cheshire Home’s General Manager David Lord said: “Kitchen Inferno not only generated plenty of heat in the kitchen along with competitive spirit, but also this amazing contribution towards the residents Support fund, thank you so much on behalf of everyone at Eric Young House.”
