Bike theft police looking for this man

Wednesday 29 July 2015

Police want to speak to this man as part of an investigation into a spate of bike thefts.

They say that they are looking into a recent increase in the number of stolen bikes.

Since the start of the month, 17 bikes have been taken from various spots around town – six of them were not locked up.

The police have taken the unusual step of releasing an image taken from CCTV cameras.

They say: “Police are looking to speak with this man in relation to one of these incidents as he may be able to help us with enquiries.

“This footage was taken on Wednesday 22nd July at Snow Hill at approximately 10:15 am.

“If you think you know who this is, please contact the States of Jersey Police.”

Overall, bike theft numbers are still down on last year.

So far this year there has been a 30% drop in bike thefts, which works out at 27 fewer bikes stolen.

But police say that Islanders should still be vigilant.

They say: “We would encourage owners to be vigilant with their personal property and where cycles are concerned, where possible, use robust security locks and look for secure areas to park them.

“If you are able, don’t leave them in public areas overnight.”

Time for a sting operation? Set up a number of unlocked bikes around town with hidden tracking devices, and monitor them. Let one get taken and see where it leads you. Hell I'd set this up, just for fun.

That might be a bit tricky for 'Old Bill'

Remember the guy a few years ago who found his stolen bike padlocked to some railings? The police said he had to leave a note on the bike for the thief! If he tried to reclaim the bike by breaking the lock they said they would arrest him!

The technology is around to do it, but not sure if it would be considered entrapment.
