Residents were unable to get out of their flat building due to a fire in the bin store filling their escape route with smoke.
People living in a block of flats in St. Peter had to stay in their apartments because a bin fire had caused the stairwell to fill with smoke.
In the early hours of this morning, the Fire Service were called to the building where a fire had broken out in the bin store on the ground floor.
Some residents were trying to get out of the building, but were trapped inside because of the amount of smoke filling the stairwell. They were advised to stay in the flats whilst firefighters extinguished the flames.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went into the store, put out the fire and opened windows in the stairwell to clear it of smoke.
After this incident, the Fire Service are reminding islanders to make a fire escape plan to ensure that everyone can exit the building safely in the event of a fire.
