Bleach-soaked cannabis worth £150k lands man in prison

Friday 09 August 2024

A 24-year-old Jersey resident has been sent to prison for attempting to import nearly 5kg of cannabis – which had been soaked in bleach to conceal the smell.

The cannabis – 4.8kg in total, with an estimated value of £150,000 – was intercepted by Customs at Jersey Post en route to Jersey on 7 September last year.

It had been wrapped in heat-sealed packages, which had been heavily coated in bleach, in order to cover up the smell of the drug.

In a covert operation the following day, Matthew Planner was arrested as he received the substitute parcel at an address in St Saviour where he used to live.

He was today sentenced in the Royal Court, where he was sentenced to two years' imprisonment.

Senior Manager Luke Goddard described the seizure as "significant", adding that it "demonstrates both the high level of vigilance our Officers have in dealing with postal traffic and the ability JCIS has in undertaking covert activities in order to bring successful prosecutions against those involved in this level of criminality".

"Undoubtedly the disruption caused to the syndicate involved will be significant and the resulting sentence reflects the seriousness of the offence," he added.
