Thursday 28 April 2016

St Helier Marina will be awash with action both on and off the water this Bank Holiday weekend when the Boat Show is back in town.

You'll have the chance to hop on board a super yacht and even try your hand at kayaking, rowing and stand-up paddle boarding.

The Barclays Jersey Boat Show kicks off on Saturday around the Marina and Weighbridge Place. This year's star attraction is the Royal Navy's HMS Severn that will be moored along the Albert Pier. She'll be joined by two University Ships - HMS Blazer and HMS Exploit along with a number of Offshore Raiding Crafts (ORCs) which will all be berthed in St Helier Marina.

Gipsy Moth IV - the world renowned yacht that Sir Francis Chichester travelled around the globe in in 1966 will be marking its 50th anniversary with a visit to the show and will be berthed on the Albert Pier pontoon.

A static display will take over the Weighbridge Place and if it's not in action will also feature a Lynx Wildcat Helicopter and it will also be the venue for two 'Beating Retreat' crowd-pleasing performances over the weekend. from the 40-strong Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines Plymouth.

The first is on Friday - the eve of this year's show, starting at 7.30 pm and they'll perform again on Saturday at 5 pm. Jersey's Lieutenant Governor will take the salute at both ceremonies.

Condor Ferries have a busy programme of water demonstrations and displays planned in their 'On-Water & Active Zone' on the Albert Pier and Les Mielles Golf & Country Club will be showcasing their 'Funzone' - a chance to experience real G-Force and Zero Gravity with their Spaceball Gyroscope.

But if golf balls are more your thing, you can take part in their mini-golf competition instead and help raise money for Mind Jersey - the Show's chosen charity for this year.

The Jersey Rowing Club will also be raising money for the charity as well as Headway Jersey with their 24-hour row-a-thon which starts at midday on Saturday in the Outdoor & Active Zone.

The Solent Stevedores main stage will see performances from Inside Job, Little Black Dress, The Jersey Bounce, Les Quennevais School Steel Band and the visiting Royal Marines Jazz Band.

Ports of Jersey's Group Commercial Director Myra Shacklady said: "As always there's a great buzz around this year's show and once again we've received overwhelming support from our sponsors, participants and exhibitors.

"As any outdoor event organiser will concur, we have no control over the weather conditions but come rain or shine we can guarantee a weekend full of free entry family fun.

"This is one of the highlights of the year for us at Ports of Jersey, an opportunity to showcase our much valued marine leisure industry as well as a perfect excuse to blow away those winter blues and kick start summer."

You can find out more here and there will be updates from the show on social media throughout the weekend.
