Breakdown: The new ministers, and their promises to you

The ten ministers have been chosen – but what does that mean to you?

Here’s a brief run-down (taken from the two days of ministerial nominations debates) of what the new Council of Ministers is planning on doing over the next term of office, and what their priorities will be.

Treasury Minister Alan Maclean

-            Modernising the public sector is a top priority.

-            Tax rises should be the last option, but can’t be ruled out.

-            Will consider tax breaks for some sectors.

-            Islanders should be able to complete tax forms online.

-            The States-owned utilities should be challenged to do better.

 
Economic Development Minister Lyndon Farnham

-            We need more focus to encourage tourism.

-            Supports integrating sport into the department’s portfolio.

-            A new body should combine sports, conferences and events.

-            More work should be done on attracting businesses to Jersey.

 
External Relations Minister Sir Philip Bailhache

-            Jersey must continue to develop its own international identity.

-            States Members should have the chance to debate foreign policy.

 
Transport and Technical Services Minister Eddie Noel

-            We should have a voluntary MOT scheme.

-            A more creative solution is needed to extend the cycle paths.

-            Charges for commercial waste could encourage recycling.

 
Social Security Minister Susie Pinel

-            We should continue with Discrimination Law covering sex, age and disability.

-            We need a disability strategy.

-            Balance longer maternity leave and higher minimum wage with effects on small businesses.

-            Parent returners and the long-term sick should get targeted support to get back to work.

 
Education Minister Rod Bryans

-            Schools should have more autonomy.

-            We should work with Digital Jersey to focus on tech and creative careers.

-            The new Youth Parliament should lobby States Members.

 
Health Minister Andrew Green

-            It would be cheaper and quicker to build the new hospital on one site, not two.

-            Mental health is as important as physical health.

-            We need to talk about mental health in the workplace and schools.

 
Home Affairs Minister Kristina Moore

-            Tackling domestic violence will be a police priority.

-            We need a safe place for people with mental health issues.

-            Reform laws on cyber-crimes, including indecent images of children, to protect the public.

 
Planning Minister Steve Luce

-            Backing new Planning appeals system to be more timely and less costly.

-            Job of Planning is to balance Environment and Economy.

-            Has reservations about five-year Planning permits.

-            Wants to resolve tension about old buildings, Planning rules and modern insulation. 

 

Housing Minister Anne Pryke

- The return of the deposit loan scheme.

- Priority is ensuring that the £250 million housing bond is spent properly.

- New Housing Strategy will include provision for more First-Time Buyer homes.
