British Airways cancellations ‘not due to cyber attack’

Saturday 26 February 2022

All British Airways short-haul flights had to be cancelled this morning as the airline was plagued by “technical issues” - but it said these were not due to a cyber attack.

On Friday night, the airline’s website and app went down, and an inbound flight from London to Heathrow was heavily delayed.

129 passengers on the BA2775 flight were left on the tarmac for more than an hour and Jersey Airport opened late to accommodate the aircraft, which eventually touched down at 23:48.

Disruption in Jersey continued this morning, with scores of BA flights cancelled.

“Affected passengers have been contacted by the airline and should not come to the airport but instead liaise directly with the airline for alternative travel options,” a spokesperson for Jersey Airport said.

They added: "All other services to/from Jersey Airport are operating as scheduled today so passengers should continue to check-in as planned allowing plenty of time for their journey as it is an expected busy few days with the end of the half-term holidays.”

While there have been warnings that Russian hackers may target critical national infrastructure following the invasion of Ukraine, British Airways said their problems were the result of a hardware failure, rather than a cyber attack.
