Burning car sparks fire service warning

Monday 20 February 2017

Islanders are being warned to be careful how they park their cars, after fire fighters were delayed on their way to tackle a blaze this weekend.

They were called to deal with a burning car in St Lawrence at midday on Sunday, only to find their way to it blocked by parked cars.

In the meantime, the owner used three fire extinguishers to try and put out the fire, and ended up pushing the burning vehicle away from other vehicles, so they didn't catch alight too.

When fire fighters arrived they were able to put the fire out using water jets, but they have now issued a warning, urging people to be careful how they park, and not to block access for the emergency services:

"The delay caused by vehicles parked on the road had little influence on the result of this incident, however had it been a more critical event the delay may have had serious consequences.  Jersey Fire and Rescue would like to urge members of the public to consider the access of all emergency vehicles when parking their cars, especially on Jersey’s narrow roads."

On their way back from that incident, the fire fighters were diverted to another fire, this time at a flat in St Helier, which they believe had been caused by unattended tea-lights. The fire had been put out by the time they arrived.

Watch Commander Mark Walker from Blue Watch said: “ Whilst no one was injured the damage to the room involved is fairly significant and it is important that people understand the dangers faced when trying to deal with a fire. The Fire and Rescue Service would advise every time that when confronted with a significant fire, the best course of action is to Get Out, Get the Fire and Rescue Service Out & Stay Out”
