Well-known finance professional passes away

Wednesday 03 January 2018

An international businessman turned Icelandic consul and Professor at the Jersey International Business School has died.

Edmund ‘Ben’ Bendelow suddenly passed away shortly after midnight on Christmas Eve, 24 December 2017.

He is survived by his two children, Sarah and Adam.

Mr Bendelow predominantly worked in financial services over the course of his career, but took a specific interest in software and payment services companies.

Originally trained in Psychology at the University of Cardiff in the 1970s, Mr Bendelow went on to secure an MBA in Business from the University of Exeter in 1994, kick-starting his international career.

Mr Bendelow began work at PwC before working his way through several law firms in Jersey. He then became a founding shareholder of the Basel Trust Corporation Group – now known as First Names Group – and held the post of Chief Executive and later Executive Chairman before his retirement in the late 2000s.

The professor-to-be’s interest in banking software began in 2004, when he took the role of Chairman at eMerchantPay Group and later Non-Executive Directorships at Cashfac Plc and Interconsult Limited.

Mr Bendelow then became the Executive Chairman of ORS Global Group, a role he held alongside his most recent role as a Lecturer in International Wealth Management Strategies at the Jersey International Business School (JIBS) where he was also a Board Director.

At the time of his appointment alongside two other professors, he was described by JIBS CEO Chris Usher as one of an “exceptional group… each of whom brings valuable talent and advice.”

As well as being a qualified accountant, he was also a member of the Tax Planning Association, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors.

He was perhaps best known, however, as the Consul for the Republic of Iceland in Jersey, a role he held for a number of years.

Mr Bendelow’s funeral will take place later this month.
