A restaurant and a food charity have teamed up to launch a culinary course for young adults to provide essential life skills, inspire a passion for cooking, and mentor the next generation of chefs.

Samphire and Caring Cooks have together produced the six-week trial course for those at the start of their cooking journey.

‘Food Stuff’ will focus on teaching basic culinary skills and creating a basic foundation from which participants can grow. 

Each student will be provided with a starter pack and will receive a certificate at the end of the course – when they will also prepare a celebratory meal to showcase their new abilities. 

The organisers plan to extend the programme throughout the year if the initial sessions are successful. 

The programme has received funding support from supermarket Waitrose and Government grant scheme 'Connect Me'.

Chef Christian Gott, who helps Caring Cooks to provide hot meals to school children, said: "There's a clear need for those who haven't had the chance to learn essential cooking skills. Our goal is to bridge this gap. 

“Through this programme, we hope to ignite a newfound interest in the culinary arts and potentially inspire career pursuits in the hospitality sector, which is so vital to our community here in Jersey.”

Chula Whelan, the CEO of Samphire, added: "We believe in creating opportunities for young people to thrive. Providing them with practical skills and knowledge in cooking is just the beginning.

"We're opening doors to lifelong learning and possibilities, pivotal for personal growth and development."

Former home economics teacher Pamela Karimjee, who helped to structure the course, said: "The programme extends beyond the basics of cooking – it's a foundation for building self-confidence, promoting well-being, and opening up pathways to potential careers in Jersey's rich hospitality industry."
