Charity given planning permission for £2m extension and upgrade

Sunday 27 November 2016

A Jersey charity that looks after physically disabled adults has been given planning permission to go ahead with its “biggest project to date."

Jersey Cheshire Home, which is based at Rope Walk off Green Street in St Helier, currently has 25 rooms, nine of which are en-suite, and includes two independent living units. Nursing care is available 24 hours a day.

The ‘Big Build Project’ aims to provide:

  • three additional en-suite bedrooms;
  • six “upgraded” bedrooms;
  • new dedicated therapy treatment room;
  • new “break out” area for staff along with improvements to the admin office facilities;
  • improved wash rooms and accessible toilets;
  • additional bed/wheelchair lift;
  • enhanced nurses station;
  • new multipurpose area for meetings, training and activities.

It’s estimated the work will cost around £2m.

In a letter to the Planning Department the charity says: “...the over-riding objectives are to increase provision for accommodating new seriously disabled residents… and helping the [charity] to become more sustainable reducing need for additional fundraising, and improving facilities provided for all residents and staff.”
