Charity offers two sailing bursaries

Sunday 03 June 2018

If you’ve always wanted to experience life aboard a tall sailing ship, you’re being given the chance to do it - for free.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust is offering two bursaries to islanders aboard either the Lord Nelson or Tenacious for a short sail in UK waters some time next year.

The charity says “no previous sailing experience is necessary, and applicants can be either able bodied or have physical or sensory disabilities. They must be over 16 years of age, enthusiastic and able to follow straightforward instructions. They should also be capable of working in a team environment and willing to fully participate as a crewmember on board.

"Islanders can nominate either themselves or someone they feel deserves to receive a bursary by writing a paragraph of 100 words or less, outlining why their candidate should be chosen and how they would benefit from the experience."

Local Jubilee Trust supporter, Tracey Watson is affected by acute hearing loss. She has been on over 50 tall ship voyages. “Each one has been memorable. You get to do absolutely everything on board, learn new skills and meet some amazing people. It has given me confidence in everything I do, on and off the water.”

Applications must be received by 10 June and the winners of the bursaries will be announced when the Lord Nelson is in Jersey between 28 and 30 June 2018. Entries should be made by email to jstjersey@googlemail.com, and further details can be found on the Jersey Jubilee Sailing Trust Facebook page.
