A local charity wants to see more than planes flying down the runway at Jersey Airport next month - and are giving you the chance to get your skates on.
You can Skate The Runway on Sunday 20 September and help raise money for people whose lives were devastated by the earthquake in Nepal in April this year.
The event is the brainchild of John Bouteloup who runs Jersey Inline Skate Club.
He said: It’s a novelty thing for the skaters, you’ll never be able to skate on this runway again, it's a one-off event.
“The important thing is to try and raise funds for the Nepal Earthquake disaster. I Went to Nepal in 2013 for a holiday and did a little bit of walking. Some of the places we were visiting were very badly devastated, they rely on the tourism and a lot of their historic relics have all been destroyed. That’s why I contacted the British Red Cross, they are there anyway supporting those people.
"We’re looking for skaters who can either rollerblade or rollerskate with quad skates. They need to have a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads but to add to a bit of colour we hope they will turn up in bright clothes or fancy dress. The main thing is to make it fun.
“In an ideal situation, I’d like to get 100 skaters raising £50 each, I think you’ve got to reach for the stars.”
The event is for anyone aged eight and upwards and will get underway once the red eye flight to London takes off.
John said: “We’ve basically got an hour and it really will depend on the planes coming in on schedule, if there’s a delay we’ll have less time to skate and we’re relying on the weather as well.
"We’ll be on the runway just after 7am but we’ll be meeting about 6.30am – I’m hoping the early start is not going to put people off!"
Each skater needs to raise at least £50 for the British Red Cross Nepal Appeal and you can register to take part by emailing admin@inlineskatejersey.co.uk
A group will be getting in some practice this weekend along the Avenue. They'll be meeting at the first shelter at West Park at 5pm on Sunday so if you want to meet some fellow skaters and pick up some tips, get your skates up and turn up!
