Child abuse: disciplinary action being taken

Tuesday 04 July 2017

Jersey’s Chief Minister has told the States those employees criticised in the Historic Abuse Inquiry who are currently still in front line services were "removed" this morning and that "disciplinary action is being taken."

Senator Gorst’s comments came during a question and answer session in the Assembly this morning after he made a brief statement.

He didn’t name who the people were who have been "removed", nor how many of them there are, or their jobs.

Senator Gorst also revealed that two more alleged victims have come forward claiming they were abused whilst in the care system. A number of investigations are still ongoing.

The Chief Minister also made it clear that he was fully behind implementing the recommendations made in the report. There are eight ‘global’ recommendations and more than 600 detailed recommendations.

He also stressed money would be found to implement the recommendations and that that didn’t necessarily mean raising taxes. "We have money in reserves that we can use right now," he told members.

Someone has already been appointed to make sure a Children’s Commissioner is created, and Senator Gorst told members he would update them on Thursday when there is a special States sitting.
