Local children gifted book as part of Coronation celebrations

The Bailiff has gifted a Coronation-themed storybook to local schoolchildren to educate students about Jersey's history with the monarchy – as part of an ongoing project which hopes to address the lack of children's books on the island's history and heritage.

All Key Stage 2 pupils and their school libraries received a copy of 'Charlie & Spud and King Charles', written by local author Penny Byrne.

Penny created the book with Jersey Heritage as part of the Island Identity project.

“We loved working on this book," she said. "It was great to dive into the complexities of how the civil war affected our island.

"Talking to experts from Jersey Heritage was fascinating and helped dispel some of the myths that still circulate around this part of our island’s story."

The book is the third book in the Touching History series, in which the character Charlie and his sidekick Spud travel through time and explore different chapters in Jersey's history.

The Island Identity project previously identified a lack of children's books on Jersey's history and heritage – a problem the 'Touching History' series aims to address.

Sir Timothy Le Cocq, Bailiff of Jersey, explained: “Jersey has a fascinating and colourful history and part of this is the story of the Island’s loyalty to King Charles II. Charlie’s adventure brings you closer to some of that story.

"This is an important part of our Jersey’s history and why we are unique and I am delighted to see it highlighted in this lovely book."

The book was commissioned as part of the Island Identity project, led by Deputy Carolyn Labey.

She said the book "allows the reader to explore the genesis of this relationship and helps in the understanding as to why the Coronation is so relevant to our island".
