Hautlieu headteacher Nick Falle has met the Prime Minister of China during his official visit to London – and it’s all down to the fact that Hautlieu is now twinned with Xi Jinping’s former school.
Mr Steel – with Chief Minister Ian Gorst and Education Minister Rod Bryans tagging along – was in London to be presented with a plaque formalising Hautlieu’s status as an official “Confucius Classroom”.
That status came about because the school is twinned with BaYi High School in Beijing, where the Chinese PM went to school.
The Education department say that Xi Jinping has taken a personal interest in the relationship between the two schools.
Mr Falle was given a placque by the headteacher of BaYi High School marking Hautlieu as a “Confucius Classroom” – one of 42 across Britain. The schools have Chinese embedded in their curriculums.
Mr Falle said: “It has been an incredible day. In receiving accreditation as the world 's 1,000th Confucius Classroom in today's ceremony with the President of China, Xi Jinping I believe that so many language and cultural opportunities are going to be available to Hautlieu students and to Jersey as a whole.
“Our commitment to this work is driven by our friendship and partnership with Beijing Bayi School, our students and teachers' enthusiasm to embrace new ways of learning and a determination to celebrate not only diversity but to recognise what we have in common. I would personally like to thank all the students and staff who have given so much to our work with China over recent years - you have made this happen!”
Next week, Deputy Bryans will spend the day at the school as part of a trip to Beijing.
