St Helier garden scoops Bailiwick's Christmas lights prize

Friday 23 December 2016

A Christmas lights display in a St Helier garden as snapped by Nadine Nelson has won top prize in this year's Bailiwick Express competition.

Derek and Pam Cauvain of 9 Whiteley Close in Grands Vaux were stunned their display had scooped the top prize.

It's the ninth year Derek has transformed his small garden into a winter wonderland. "It takes about a week to set everything up. But it's worth it. Every year I do something a little different. Then, around January 2nd I dismantle the display and put the figures and lights back in the loft ready for the next festive season" says Derek.

He's already starting to think about next year. "I hope it'll be even bigger and even better" he says.

It's free to go and look at his lights although he does collect for Jersey Cancer Relief in memory of a friend who died of the disease a number of years ago.

This year's competition judge was Alan Garnham, Senior Production and Maintenance Engineer at Jersey Electricity.

"It was a difficult decision but after much consideration I have chosen Nadine’s entry. She’s really captured the Christmas spirit that would delight children and adults alike. The detailing is amazing; there are parcels, stockings, stars, Christmas trees and Santa Claus. It encompasses the entire house right up to the rooftop. There’s even a sleigh and reindeer up there. Nadine has really created a mini wonderland. And of course you could only do this with electricity!"
