A man who raped a woman in St Luke’s Churchyard in an early morning attack has been jailed for five years.
Ahmed Mohamed Bakr Hassan (35) admitted counts of rape and indecent assault over the attack, which took place early in the morning on Monday 21 September.
The victim had been walking home after a night out with friends when she was attacked at around 2 am.
A police statement at the conclusion of the case said that Hassan had been identified and caught within two days of the offence - and it also underlined that "stranger rapes" are particularly rare cases in Jersey.
The statement said: "The victim in this case must be commended for her bravery in coming forward and the early recovery of forensic samples was crucial to this investigation. This together with the CCTV work that was carried out by officers led to the quick identification of the suspect who was arrested within 48 hours of the offence.
"Stranger rapes are a particularly serious offence for the police to investigate, but thankfully these are a rare occurrence in Jersey.
"The States of Jersey Police have the utmost determination to investigate and prosecute sexual offenders and we can assure victims that there is help available from a number of agencies who are in a position to offer support and guidance through all stages of the criminal justice process."
Also in the Royal Court yesterday was Matthew Christopher McNulty, who was jailed for five years, for nine sex abuse charges.
Police said McNulty had “carried out sustained sexual abuse over a lengthy period of time”.
They also praised the victims in the case for having the bravery to step forward to tell the police what had happened.
