Coastguard campaign to keep you safer at sea

You'll be awash with news on how you can take a dip and stay safe in the sea this Summer.

Jersey Coastguard is launching its 'Safety at Sea' campaign this weekend with a new mix of radio, online and TV advertising.

Their campaign runs throughout August with tips like making sure you check the weather and tides before you head for the beach, staying sober and the numbers you need to call if you see someone in trouble.

It's part of a year-long education programme the Coastguard have been running that specifically targets youngsters.

During the Summer term they visited over 20 schools giving children lessons about beach lifeguards and flags, rip currents, cold water shock, pier and rock jumping, safety on the water and how to call them for help.

Jersey Coastguard and VTS Manager, Russell Mathew said: “We aim to reach every school pupil in the Island at least once every two years, hoping to educate and encourage the community on how to make the most of Jersey’s fantastic surroundings in a safe manner. This specific campaign is a timely reminder for the increasing number of people now taking to the water to ensure they take the necessary precautions." 

He said he hopes both the Safety at Sea campaign and the Schools Education programme will inspire Islanders and visitors to safely explore what the Island's coasts.
