Coastguard goes green with first fully electric car

Jersey Coastguard has added its first ever electric vehicle to its emergency response fleet.

The team hope their recently-acquired car, a Kia Niro EV, will allow them reach emergencies quickly while generating zero emissions.

Dan Downey, Jersey Coastguard and Vessel Traffic Services manager, said: "As well as playing a vital role in helping us respond to emergency situations at sea, being fully electric means it will cost less to run and maintain and will help us cut our carbon footprint as we look at ways to make Jersey Coastguard greener."

The introduction of the car – nicknamed 'CG1' – aims to help Ports of Jersey with their goal of reaching net-zero by 2030.

They have already added a BMW i3 to their Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Service, and say they are hoping to add even more EVs to their fleet.

The car model was chosen following "an extensive research programme", according to Ports.

Kia EVs are a popular pick among emergency services, with HM Coastguard among those in the UK to have added it to their fleets. This is due to their long range and reliability.

The electric vehicle replaces a Toyota Hilux, which is expected to become a response vehicle for the Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Service.
