Serena: "Best day of my sporting career"

Sunday 15 April 2018

Jersey-born netball player Serena Guthrie has won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia with team England.

In a tightly fought semi-final the ‘Roses’ – as the English team is dubbed – beat Jamaica's ‘Sunshine Girls’ to whom they’d lost the bronze medal at the last games, 56-55.

And on the last day of the competition, England beat the hosts - and favourites - Australia.

They beat the team - who are known as the ‘Diamonds’ - in the most dramatic fashion, 52–51.

It looked as if the game was going to go into extra time when England scored the winning point with just seconds to go.

Following the team's victory, sports star Guthrie made an emotional post on her Instagram profile (@serenabob), describing it as the "best day of my sporting career."

"I left home at 16 to persue [sic] this dream. Today I lived my dream. It was MAGNIFICENT. To all those supporting us THANK YOU... YOU'VE BEEN SENSATIONAL," she wrote.

The post (pictured above), which was accompanied by a photo of the team celebrating, has since racked up nearly 8,000 'likes' at the time of writing.

Her former school, Le Rocquier, have since praised the netballer, congratulating her and the rest of the England team on their "incredible win."
