Contested Constable election in St. Lawrence

A St. Lawrence volunteer with a background in retail and hospitality is hoping to become Constable to use her own experiences to help families and islanders in need.

Emily Clarke Joseph is standing as an independent candidate.

Ms Joseph describes herself as a “mother of twins, with strong family links with the Parish and is active in Parish life”. Not only is she PTA Secretary of St. Lawrence School, but is also a member of the St. Lawrence Ladies Action Group and regularly helps out at the parish market.

As well as holding a degree in International Relations and Peace and Conflict Studies, Ms Clarke Joseph has a Masters degree in War and Human Rights Journalism.

“Being 35, I wish I could say I have had a career for the past decade in a particular field, but I haven’t. Apart from my Degree and Masters and raising my twins, I have always been employed in retail and hospitality. Our family has had a number of health crises over the years for which I have had responsibilities as sole carer," she explained to Express.

"I feel through these experiences I can not only relate to families in crisis but know that one often needs an advocate to fight for the support they deserve.

“It is another reason I am passionate to be in a position to help other families in times of need.”

If elected, she said her “key priority will be to strengthen and support the Parish system and community through introducing new events and initiatives for all ages.”

“With rising costs and global uncertainty”, Ms Clarke Joseph said her academic background should also serve her well, and “enable her to convey the needs and best interests of all parishioners when voting in the States Assembly.” 

Sitting Constable Deirdre Mezbourian is the only other person to have confirmed they are standing for the role.

Jersey’s election is taking place on 22 June.
