People who suffer heart attacks outside of a hospital have less than a one in ten chance of surviving – but today, islanders are being taught how to help prevent tragedies.

Health officials will be on hand in Les Quennevais and King Street to show others how they might be able to save a life as part of ‘Restart a Heart Day’.

From the morning until late afternoon, they’ll show islanders the basics of CPR both using their hands and with a defibrillator – of which there are 45 on the island, but few people who are comfortable using it.

Janet Davison, Training and Development Officer for the Ambulance Service, commented: “It’s great that a network of defibrillator sites has built up across the Island in recent years, we now want to make sure people know where they are and how to use them.

“People worry that they might make the patient worse, but the only wrong thing you can do for someone in this position is to ignore them.

She added: “Anyone could encounter a situation where someone’s had a cardiac arrest, whether it’s a loved one or someone they’ve never met. A few minutes spent being given basic advice should make people more confident that they can step up if required.”

Sessions will be held at Les Quennevais from 8:00 to 15:00, and between Jack Wills and Hamons in King Street 9:30 to 15:30.
