A woman was seriously injured when she was hit by a car while walking on a pavement near the Airport Garage this afternoon.
The accident is said to have involved two cars and two pedestrians – the pedestrians were hit by a dark coloured Honda Jazz being driven down the pavement, which then hit a black VW Polo heading the other way. Two off-duty firefighters and paramedics were first to the scene and started treating the casualties before the police and a team of firefighters arrived.
Firefighters were called to the scene of the accident at around 1.15 pm with a rescue unit to help remove casualties from vehicles.
Crew Commander Craig Channing said: “On arrival, Paramedics, along with two off-duty Fire fighters were already administrating Trauma care the most severely injured of the Pedestrian casualties as well as the driver of one of the vehicles.
“Although no one was physically trapped in either of the two vehicles the Fire and Rescue Service assisted both the Paramedics and States Police in casualty care and ensuring that both vehicles were made safe.
“The driver of the second vehicle was treated on scene for shock and was subsequently taken to Hospital for observation and assessment.”
The road was still closed five hours later.
