A longstanding scorer from the Jersey Cricket Board has recently obtained the highest qualification from the ECB Association of Cricket Officials and become a certified Level 3 Scorer.
Gina Kearns is the first scorer from the Channel Islands to receive the qualification which will allow her to score at Test Match level.
Gina has been scoring for over 30 years. Little did she know that when she first started scoring, she had also met the man who would become her husband.
"I didn’t have a clue about cricket or that if you play 50 over matches it basically takes up your whole day!," Gina admitted. "I was not impressed and said that I would not be going to another match."
However, Gina returned and with the help of her husband, went on to learn everything she needed to be a great scorer. "For the next match he had brought me a book, and explained the symbols for each event that can happen on each delivery - which by the way were mostly wrong!," Gina explained.
"After a couple of weeks he brought me coloured pens, clock and told me to do it properly as I now had enough practice with pencil."
Gina got hooked on scoring and went on to get official recognition from the ECB Association of Cricket Officials, After several tries, she finally obtained her level 1 in 2008 and Level 1A followed about two years later. "In 2012, I obtained my level 2," Gina said. "Last year I was invited to partake in the Level 3 course, which if needed you can take up to 3 years to complete."
Having obtained her Level 3, the highest one available, Gina said she is now believed to be "competent enough to undertake the highest standards of cricket scoring up to test match levels."
