Another major crime drop

Sunday 20 April 2014

Recorded crime has now dropped by a third since 2011 as the police reveal another year of falling crime stats.

Police chief Mike Bowron has praised his force after recorded crime dropped 17% last year – following on from falls of 4% and 13% in the last two years. But he says that officers are still attending just as many incidents as they have always done, and says that they are increasingly dealing with complex issues such as sexual abuse, cybercrime, domestic abuse, organised crime and counter-terrorism.

Chief Officer Mike Bowron said: “2013 was another successful year for the States of Jersey Police, to see crime dropping by such a significant amount again is something I am very proud of. I have some tremendous and dedicated staff working for me and I am grateful to them for all their hard work.

“However, I don’t want people to think that because the crime figures are dropping that we are suddenly not very busy, when in fact the opposite is true. Much of our work is now away from the limelight, and throughout the year we plan to let the public have a glimpse into some of the other work we do, for example the domestic abuse and cybercrime elements of policing.”

The stats released by the force in its annual report show that 2013 saw:

-          A 32% drop in violence in the “night time economy”.

-          A 31% reduction in drug offences.

-          A 27% fall in offences against property.

-          A 22% drop in theft.

-          A 5% reduction in offences against the person (largely assaults).
