Dance World Cup hopefuls to honour Kezia and Ukraine

Thursday 31 March 2022

Some of the island’s top young performers will be coming together next weekend to celebrate and honour a talented teenage actress who recently passed away in Jersey, and the Ukrainian dancers who have suffered or lost their lives in the war.

Dance World Cup is a competition where over 120,000 children around the world compete to get their country in the Finals.

The competition's Channel Island Qualifiers are due to be held in Jersey from 8 April at Haute Vallée School, and the successful dancers will be taking part in a commemorative gala on 10 April.

Entitled 'Dance for Ukraine', the gala will start at 17:30 and last around two hours. A large proportion of the ticket sale money from the gala will be donated towards the Dance World Cup's appeal to get displaced Ukrainians in Europe to the Dance World Cup.

After the sad news of JCG student Kezia Mason's sudden passing earlier this month, it was also decided that the gala would celebrate her life and a retiring collection will be made at the end of the show.

"Kezia was a dancer and actress, and her death has affected many, so it seemed appropriate to celebrate her life, as well as the dancers we have sadly lost in the Ukraine war or those suffering mental anguish because of events occurring in the world," said John Grimshaw, Chair of the Dance World Cup.

He said that, "with over 200 dancers from both Jersey and Guernsey, participating and two international judges, Niall and Nicky McMahon from the UK, we are expecting the standard to be high" at the qualifiers this year.

The Dance World Cup finals are held annually in different locations, with previous finals taking place in countries like Portugal and Italy.

The finals this year will be held in San Sebastian, Spain from 24 June to 02 July 2022. Over 50 countries will be attending featuring 5000 dancers aged between 4 and 25 years old.

Tickets to the gala open to the public and can be purchased on Eventbrite.
