Date fixed for hospital planning application hearing

Saturday 22 July 2017

A public inquiry to scrutinise plans for a new multi-million pound hospital is being held in November and is expected to last about a week.

It’s being carried out by an independent planning inspector, Philip Staddon, although the Planning Minister, Deputy Steve Luce, will have the final say.

After months of debate it was decided to build the ‘new’ hospital on land bordering the current one. But the scheme does involve demolishing the Stafford Hotel, Revere Hotel, 33-40 and 44 Kensington Place, including Sutherland Court, and parts of the General Hospital. The application also involves landscaping, and the addition of two half-decks of parking to Patriotic Street car park.

According to Deputy Luce “The application for a new hospital is a significant and important development in St Helier and will have an impact and be used by our entire community. We must make the right decision and the planning inquiry will ensure the application can be examined in public and an objective assessment of whether this is the right development in planning terms can be made.”

Anyone who wants to make a representation to the inquiry is asked to submit it to the Programme Officer by 17:00 on Friday 8 September 2017. This can be by post to Helen Wilson, New Hospital Programme Officers, c/o Department of the Environment, South Hill, St Helier, JE2 4US, or via email to progofficer@aol.com. The submission should not exceed 1500 words and must include the author’s name and postal address.
