In-demand ADHD support group seeks “hub” to expand support

Thursday 02 May 2024

A support group for islanders with ADHD is calling for a centralised hub to coordinate its advocacy efforts and expand its educational programmes to accommodate the rising demand for its services.

ADHD Jersey aims to raise awareness of ADHD and support affected adults and children through online platforms and bi-monthly meetings at Jersey Cheshire Home Community Centre in Green Street.

This provides a space for ADHD patients to connect with others facing similar challenges, share experiences, and seek advice – even without a formal diagnosis

The peer-led non-profit organisation has also run workshops at local businesses

These sessions aim to educate employers about the condition and to teach them strategies to support ADHD employees.

They also run a 13-week initiative designed to help individuals with ADHD reframe negative beliefs they may have internalised over time by providing structured support and guidance.

ADHD Jersey is seeking sponsorship to fund a central hub to expand these programmes and offer enhanced support to the ever-growing number of islanders with ADHD.

This comes after a surge in referrals in recent years has overwhelmed an under-staffed ADHD service and led to a backlog of more than 700 patients.

Founder Rachel Tippet said: "As we continue to grow and expand our reach, we find ourselves in need of a space that can serve as a hub for our operations, a place where we can conduct workshops, host support group meetings, and carry out the day-to-day activities that drive our mission forward."

She said the space would ideally have a smaller office space for meetings, a larger room that could accommodate up to 20, and facilities for refreshments.

Mrs Tippet said that this presents an opportunity for sponsors to be recognised as advocates for mental health and community well-being. In return, ADHD Jersey will acknowledge any contributions in its communications, events, and promotional materials.
