A group of intrepid trekkers from Jersey braved long days, steep inclines and altitudes above 13,000ft to raise over £40,000 for a local dementia charity.
The 17 hikers took on the four-day trek through the Inca Trail in Peru during September.
However, the total funds raised from their hard work were announced this week.
As the participants were all self-funded, paying for flights and accommodation themselves, to ensure that all donations went to Dementia Jersey.
Among the trekkers was Fatima Luis, a care worker who was inspired by her patients to take on the challenge.
Speaking to Express earlier this year, she said she would keep the people she has cared for in her mind while on her journey.
Dementia Jersey's Income and Engagement Coordinator, Nadine Jagger said: “We are incredibly proud of our group of trekkers and their amazing achievement.
"We couldn’t have asked for a better bunch of people to be part of our first fundraising trek. The support they showed for each other along the way was admirable.
"We’re very grateful for their dedication and generosity in taking on this challenge and raising such a significant amount for Dementia Jersey.
"The funds raised will go towards supporting people in Jersey affected by dementia and will make a huge difference to so many lives.”
The charity has announced its 2024 trek, which will take islanders on an "epic challenge" to Mount Kilimanjaro.
Dates: 7th – 16th September 2024
Cost: £3,350 (includes flights from London, accommodation, meals and transfers throughout the trek)
Minimum sponsorship required per person: £1,700
Nadine said: “After hearing great things about the Kilimanjaro trek from our trek partner, Discover Adventure, we’re really excited to be able to offer this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
"It’s another great opportunity for people to challenge themselves to do something very different whilst raising money for an important cause.”
