Digital degree apprenticeship launched for school-leavers

Wednesday 12 July 2017

School-leavers have until Friday to apply for a chance to gain a digital degree whilst earning a salary.

The two successful applicants will graduate from the programme with a degree in Digital and Technology Solutions, a job and no student debt.

This new initiative from KPMG in the Channel Islands is run in association with the apprentice programme, Trackers, and the University of Exeter and will be jointly funded by KPMG and the States of Jersey.

The apprenticeship, which will begin in September 2017, combines the undergraduate university experience with paid employment and industrial experience. Study will involve three to four days on campus per term, as well as a number of work-based projects. Students will receive significant on-the-job training and coaching with KPMG to develop a broad set of digital, technical and consulting skills.

Apprentices, whilst being full-time employees, will gain their BSc in Digital Technology Solutions over four years through residential teaching and online learning such as webinars, interactive exercises and recorded lectures as well as work-based learning.

Whilst training, the apprentices can expect a salary of between £14,000 - £19,000 without having to pay tuition fees. Apprentices are also entitled to 23 days holiday, study leave, travel costs associated with residential learning in Exeter and private medical insurance. Degree apprentices have full membership at the university, extending to academic, welfare and career support, as well as access to societies and sports clubs.

Ross Edgar, Manager at Trackers says: "Trackers are thrilled to be able to offer a new pathway on island at higher and degree level. Following on from the success of the mentoring model utilised by the programme we are excited to be working alongside KPMG to provide this opportunity on island."

Jason Laity, Chairman of KPMG in the Channel Islands, says: "There is a huge demand for digital skills globally and that demand will increase as digital becomes ever more disruptive. School leavers looking for a degree in this field are, and will continue to be, in high demand.

"Jersey needs to grow and retain its local talent if it is to remain competitive in the digital era. As a local firm, KPMG in the Channel Islands is ideally placed to pioneer this initiative, to support our ambitious and future-focused young achievers, and to offer them secure and exciting career opportunities locally."

The successful applicants will be joining the locally based digital team at KPMG and will work on a series of commercial client projects including everything from robotic process automation to cyber security.

The firm is looking for candidates with predicted A-levels of AAB or equivalent to apply for the programme here. The application deadline is Friday 14 July and interviews will commence the week of 17 July.
