Islander invited to 'gear up' for 500km Southeast Asia charity cycle

Islanders are being invited to join a 12-day cycle trek from Vietnam to Cambodia to help a local disability charity provide respite holidays for "selfless" carers.

Maison des Landes recently announced the fundraising event which will see up to 40 cyclists embark on a two-wheel adventure from Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam to Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

Scheduled for November 2024, the trip promises to provide "a fascinating insight into the region's cultures, both ancient and modern".

The 500km journey will end at the Royal Temples of Angkor Wat, described by the charity as "one of Southeast Asia's most impressive sights".

Each participant is expected to raise a minimum of £2,000 ahead of the cycle – with all funds raised to provide respite holidays at Maison des Landes for Jersey caregivers.

There are an estimated 6,000 caregivers in the island, who the charity say "selflessly assume the responsibility of caring for a loved one with a disability, often without a pause in their demanding caregiving duties".

Maison des Landes described their respite breaks as "a vital source of relief for caregivers, allowing them the opportunity to recharge".

Peter Tabb, Chairman of the charity's Board of Trustees, said: "It can be exceedingly challenging for Jersey caregivers to find an opportunity for a meaningful break to recharge.

"This is where Maison des Landes steps in, offering year-round respite breaks for Jersey's caregivers.

"Every conversation we've had about respite in Jersey underscores the pressing need for this support."

A launch event for anyone interested in taking part in the cycle challenge is scheduled for 18:00 on Tuesday 9 January at Kingsmans Executive Office Suites, Castle Street, St Helier.
