Do you know a young Islander who’s shown the same personal qualities as Sir George Carteret - the most celebrated Jerseyman in the Island’s history?
There’s a grand up for grabs for someone under the age of 19 who’s demonstrated loyalty, endeavour and a tireless determination to their cause.
The Sir George Carteret Endeavour Award is a new one – the brainchild of the Constable of St Peter who has launched it on the first anniversary of the unveiling of the big statue in his parish erected to commemorate the man who ensured Jersey's allegiance to the Royalist cause during the English civil war and who helped to safely shelter the future King Charles II in the Island during his exile.
Constable John Refault says the award is not necessarily designed for someone who always excels at everything, but to acknowledge a young person living in the Island who has given their time to a well-meaning project selflessly and consistently and regardless of any personal reward - showing a determination to succeed that’s beyond the norm.
The winner will get £1,000 – half to give to the charity of their choice.
The Island’s Lieutenant Governor will be judging all the entries along with the Constable and the CEO and Chairman of Jersey financial services firm JTC – the company supporting the new award.
Nigel Le Quesne said: “JTC’s business has been successfully built on a number of guiding principles which include a ‘can do attitude’ and ‘above and beyond service’ and we will be looking for similar qualities in the applications received.
“To acknowledge the remarkable career of this leading figure from Jersey’s past in a way that helps ensure he will not be forgotten, while awarding the extraordinary efforts of a young Islander from the present is an inspired and worthy initiative which we are delighted to support.”
You can nominate anyone under the age of 19 who you think deserves to win and you can find out more here.
