Donations pour in to fund Zsuzsanna's funeral

Friday 15 June 2018

Islanders and friends of a 37-year-old woman who was found dead on a Jersey beach have donated over £1,300 in less than a week to pay for her funeral.

Zsuzsanna Besenyei was found at La Pulec on 16 May, after being reported missing days earlier. 54-year-old Jamie Lee Warn was charged with her murder and perverting the course of justice at the end of May.

While she didn't have any family on the island, police said Zsuzsanna had been in Jersey for the past seven or eight years.

Friends of Zsuzsanna set up a crowdfunding page last week to help fund her funeral. At the time of writing, they have already raised £1,310 of the £5,000 they are aiming to raise.

The news comes as an inquest into her death opens this morning. The coroner, Deputy Viscount Mark Harris, is due to release her body to allow funeral arrangements to be made.

Writing on the crowdfunding page, one of the friends said said: "Zsuzsanna Besenyei (our Hungarian friend) who was sadly taking away from us at an early age of 37. Zsuzsanna will be sadly missed by her Jersey family and friends. We have created this page to help and support the Besenyei family with funeral costs for our friend Zsuzsanna.

"It is a very difficult time for the Besenyei family. We appreciate any donations that you are able to give and we are very thankful for your support."

An anonymous donator wrote: "Very sad and undeserved end. Deep condolences."

Caritas International Jersey helped the friends set up a bank account so that donations could be received and has been offering support with their administration. One of Zsuzsanna's friends explained that her family will be traveling to Jersey at the end of the month to make arrangements for her funeral.

She said she was overwhelmed by how much support the crowdfunding page has so far received, with many contacting her over social media as well. "I want to say thank you to everyone for their donations," she added. "It's absolutely amazing."

The friends are hoping to hold an event either on the 25 or 26 June to remember Zsuzsanna and raise more funds.
