Don’t be a couch potato!

Monday 19 October 2015

Dozens of teams are preparing to boil again next month as they race up the hill at Grève de Lecq with a royal weight on their hands.

The Great Jersey Potato Sack Carry Challenge is back on Sunday 29 November and will see runners climbing 500 very steep metres up Le Chemin du Catel.

It’s ‘The Surfers’ time they’ll be looking to smash this year - they completed the challenge in 2014 in just 2:24 minutes.

Albert Bartlett is once again providing the sacks of spuds weighing 15kg for the women to carry and 25kg for the men.

Organiser Tim De Gruchy said: “The Great Jersey Potato Sack Carry Challenge is the friendliest
and probably one of the toughest events in the Jersey calendar, now into its
third year we're expecting to see even more islanders taking part and spectators lining the whole route.

“All funds will go to support the outstanding contributions of two local charities, Jersey Cheshire Home and The Jersey Brain Tumour Charity. It's a local event, supported by local companies and authorities to raise money for local people. So come and join us!”

Jersey Cheshire Home’s General Manager David Lord said: “The adults we care for suffer with severe physical disabilities such as MS, Spina Bifida, Strokes and Head injuries – conditions that could affect any one of us – and we do all we can to enable them to lead as full and independent lives as possible, although I can’t say this encompasses running up hill carrying a sack of potatoes! This event is going to be a lot of fun and we’re very grateful to all those taking part.”

Jersey Brain Tumour Charity Chairman Sue May said: “After the success of the previous event we are thrilled to see it back again & look forward to seeing many islanders taking on this challenge.

“The islanders we support face many uphill challenges from the moment of diagnosis and we are there every step of the way to help them on their journey & thank all those who are helping with this event.”

This year there will be spuds to entertain the children too – those who remember to bring a spoon! There’s a 100 metre potato and spoon race for the under 6’s, under 10’s and under 16’s.
