Don’t make it a good crimbo for fraudsters!

Sunday 06 December 2015

If you’re doing your Christmas shopping online you’d better watch your gifts aren’t getting into the wrong hands.

The police say Christmas is the best time of year for criminals and Jersey’s Fraud Prevention Forum want to make sure we don't become victims of online crime.

Over the next ten days they are posting their top tips to make sure we don’t get caught out by bogus websites, virus infected e-Christmas cards, charity scams, auction and ticketing fraud and social media scams.

And they want to make sure we really are bagging a bargain with this tip: ‘If something seems too much of a bargain it’s probably poor quality or doesn’t even exist.  Always check payment pages are secure and log out when you’ve finished shopping online.’

States of Jersey Police Detective Chief Inspector Lee Turner said: “Christmas is a favourite time of year for criminals. People are busy buying presents online and often do not think about protecting themselves and their finances from fraudsters.

“There are some simple steps all islanders can take to ensure that they surf and shop safely and do not get conned this Christmas.”

Director of Enforcement Barry Faudemer said: “We are seeing an increase in reports of cyber-crime nationally and Christmas is always the time of year when people get caught out.

“We are advising people to invest in adequate internet security and antivirus software, to check their home Wi-Fi is secure, to use protected payment methods when buying online, and to double-check the legitimacy of any websites they may be buying from.”

The Forum is using the hashtag #DontGetConnedAtChristmas.

If you think you’ve been the victim of a scam call the police on 612612. You can get more information about the Jersey Fraud Prevention Forum here.
