One passenger was taken to hospital yesterday after a double-decker drove straight into the side of the bus station building, smashing in the windows on the top deck.
Passengers had to scramble away from their seats as the glass shattered, but there were some injuries from cuts, shock and impact.
The Hospital say that a 53-year-old man was treated in the A&E department, but was discharged last night.
Pictures of the crash were quickly shared on social media as the blocked road caused major disruption to the rush-hour traffic.
The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said that the response to the incident was hampered by the fact that so many emergency services personnel are on duty at NatWest Island Games events.
But the senior firefighter who dealt with the incident – Station Commander Clive Russell – praised not just the emergency services, but the LibertyBus staff who got passengers off the bus, and ‘Games Makers’ for the Island Games who provided additional help.
He said: “Although we had a very small part to play in this operation, this was a really impressive response to a major event that would have tested other much larger communities, combined with the good fortune of so few injuries in a crash that could easily have been so much worse, leaves us all feeling very pleased with the outcome.”
LibertyBus have released a brief statement saying that they are conducting a full investigation into what went wrong.
They said: "LIbertyBus can confirm that one of its vehicles was involved in an incident at Liberation Station yesterday at approximately 1730. We are conducting a full investigation into the incident and cooperating fully with the States of Jersey Police. We would like to thank our customers for their patience during the road closure yesterday evening."
